Description: The Harrier breed is similar to the English foxhounds, but we see it is smaller. This dog has a well proportioned head, it has a bold forehead. The muzzle is about the same length as the skull. The teeth met in a level or scissor bite. This breed has a black, wide, nose with open nostrils. This dog has medium sized eyes that are dark brown in colour. This breed have wide set ears that are low, hanging down to the side of the cheeks, and are brown or hazel in colour. The legs are straight, ending in round cats like feet. The tale is set high, and is long. The coat is short, glossy and fine and can be in any colour, with the most popular being tri-coloured. The height is 19-21 inches, and their weight is 40-60 pounds. This breed’s life expectancy is 10-12 years.

History: The Harrier is believed to have been bred down in size, from the English foxhounds, but the exact origins are not clear. This breed is larger than the beagle. The Harrier was bred for hunting hares, and this is where it gained its name. This dog is popular in England, as it is slower, so it’s good for the hunter on foot. This may be a slower dog, but its stamina in the field is brilliant. This dog has an excellent nose and is often worked in packs, in England. This dog is rare in the USA and was recognized by the AKC in 1885.

Temperament: This is a playful and outgoing dog, very similar to the foxhound. This breed has a sweet temperament and is tolerant and excellent with children. This is a good dog to have as a pack dog, or it can work on its own. This breed is not to be trusted with non canine pets. This dog explores and love sniffing and trailing and is an active dog. This breed requires patience and firm training, and the owner needs to be a good pack leader, providing mental and physical exercises, including good long daily walks. This breed can become destructive and highly strung, if not given enough exercise. The temperament of this dog, both the field and show lines vary widely, and it is down to how the owner treats the dog and the type of exercise they provide that will be a contributing factor to the temperament. The Harrier requires brisk walking. So the dog is best in the company of someone who enjoys jogging. This breed is best enjoyed by active people who enjoy hikes or hunting as this dog has a tendency to roam and track instinctively.

Health issues: The Harrier is of good general health, and occasionally has been known to have epilepsy and hip dysplasia.

Grooming: Harriers are easy to keep clean and tidy, only occasionally needing brushing or combing out the dead hair.

Living conditions: This breed is not recommended for apartment life. But if the owner was exceptionally active and able to incorporate the dogs daily needs it could work. A Harrier will enjoy acreage, and at least a large garden.

Top 10 Dog Breeds for Children

Posted by: Beagle Training | Comments (0)

Dog owners and lovers alike know the joy and happiness bringing a dog into your home can bring. Choosing the right dog can be a challenge. Especially if you have small children.

Dogs are a great way for children to learn about responsibility and love. Whilst having a great time.

The decision to bring a dog into your home should never be taken lightly. There are many factors to consider.

Like is your home suitable for a dog

Does it have a back yard? Will there be people around a lot to walk water and feed the dog? Are my children ready (old enough) for the responsibility of a dog? Can we afford the extra expense a dog will bring? What will we do with our dog if we go away on holiday? What breed of dog should I get for my situation?

Just like humans dogs have personalities. And the general demeanour of a dog can be traces back to its breeding.

This list has been compiled to help you make an informed choice if you are ready to introduce your kids to their best friend over the next 15 years or so.

It is not in order of preference since everyone’s situation is different.

Labrador Retriever – One of the more popular family breeds. They have lovely temperaments and are very intelligent, they love playing outdoors and enjoy long walks and exercise but if these needs are met, they are content enough to curl up with you and snooze.

Border Collies – Maybe more widely known as “Lassie Dogs”, these gorgeous dogs are doing very well with children. They are kind and gentle but active. Their coat needs to be brushed regularly to avoid matting.

Beagles - These dogs are ideal for a family who like the outdoors and lots of exercise. Their coats are easy to care for; they love to play with kids and are very sweet and good natured.

Shih Tzu – Originally used as companion dogs, these little dogs are also good with children, their long hair can be hard to maintain but if being kept as pet, it can be kept short. (Puppy Cut) They are very social dogs and love being with people.

Golden Retriever- The traditional family dog and are completely gentle and patient with kids. They love to play, are very smart and do well with a lot of children in the home. They relish playing ball and retrieving and need a lot of exercise.

Poodle – The Poodle is a very smart dog and can come in 3 sizes (Standard, Miniature and Toy). They are quite easy to train and adore their family. They also are ideal for those with allergies and their coat is easy to take care of.

Great Dane – Although very tall, these dogs are mild mannered and placid, they are known for their patience around kids and are extremely gentle.

Newfoundland (“Newfs” or “Newfies”) – These dogs are superb with kids and are very kind and protective. Known as “The Gentle Giant” or “Natures Babysitter”, these dogs do have coats that need a lot of attention and do tend to drool but really have a wonderfully sweet personality.

Pugs – With their curly tail and scrunched up little faces, these dogs are adorable, they are incredibly good with kids and love to play. These dogs seem to prefer people to other animals and are extremely social creatures.

Beagle Pug Cross – my personal favourite and both these breeds of dog are suited to families. They are mild tempered and don’t grow too big. They prefer humans over other animals or dogs which make them the perfect choice for kids. They have a lot of energy but don’t need to play and run for hours on end before they will sit still.

When choosing a dog to be the newest member of the family always make sure you predetermine the type of lifestyle you live and the lifestyle that the dog will have. Don’t choose a energetic dog if you don’t really have time to walk your dog.

It is also beneficial to get a new dog as a puppy as you will have complete control over you dog’s education and training. Enabling you to have complete control over your dog’s behavioural patterns.

This gives your puppy the time to get to know you and more importantly your kids without being a threat. You should implement training from day 1.

Of the approximately four hundred breeds of dog in the world, there are only 146 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. Divided into sub groups, these groups are:

· Terriers
· Non-sporting
· Toys
· Sporting
· Working
· Hounds
· Herding

In the terrier group, some of the breeds of dog are American Staffordshire terrier, border terriers, bull terriers, fox terriers, and jack russell terriers. These breeds of dogs are usually competitive and determined. The fighting breeds, such as bull terriers and pit bulls, are assertive and fearless but they are trying to breed down their aggression. The vermin hunters such as jack Russel terriers are extremely fast.

In the non-sporting group, there is a huge diversity in origin, size and type of dogs. They bred many in the non-sporting groups to do specific jobs but because it is obsolete, they became companion dogs. The most popular are miniature and standard poodles. Some of the other dogs in the non-sporting group are chow chow, Dalmatian, American Eskimo, French bulldog, and Boston terrier.

The toy group consists of very small dogs that are wonderful companions. They are usually very affectionate pets and great for smaller homes and apartments. Some of the many dogs in the toy group are Boston terrier, cavalier King Charles spaniel, Chihuahua, Papillon, toy poodle and pug.

Dogs in the sporting group are alert and naturally active with remarkable instincts in the woods or water. Many sporting dogs still participate in field activities and hunting. These loyal, intelligent dogs require a lot of exercise. Some sporting dogs are the American water spaniel, Chesapeake Bay retriever, pointer, Irish water spaniel and Labrador retriever.

Working dogs do just that. They breed these dogs to do jobs such as water rescues, pulling dog sleds, avalanche rescue, smell out illegal drugs and guarding people or property. Saint Bernard dogs, Dobermans, boxers are just a few of many working dogs.

Dogs in the hound group are great hunters. Some use their intense sense of smell to trail their prey. Other hounds have tremendous stamina which shows when they run down their quarry. Some dogs in the hound group are beagles, black and tan coonhounds, American foxhound, and the bloodhound. Hounds have a very distinct howl that is not for everyone.

Dogs in the herding group have an uncanny ability to control sheep and other livestock by controlling their movements. Although most herding dogs are fabulous family pets, their herding instincts are still apparent when they try herding their owners, especially children. Along with herding, these dogs love playing, working, exercise, and easy to train. Herding dogs make fabulous companions and are quick at training exercises. Some herding dogs are the Australian cattle dog, Border collie, Belgian sheepdog, collie, Pembroke Welsh corgi, German shepherd and Shetland sheepdogs.

The advantage of getting a purebred dog is their predictable behavior but there are many wonderful mixed breeds dogs also. No matter which group of dog you consider for a pet always become knowledgeable before selecting a breed.

Some people might be intimidated to do Beagle puppy training on their own. This is because for most people this is probably the first pet they have gotten that is totally dependent on them for training.

Despite the fact that this breed has been around for close to 200 years, your puppy still depends on you to give it to the proper training that it needs. Here are some essential tips to help you get the most out of your Beagle puppy training sessions.

First of all, whenever you attempt to do any training at all, make sure you do it in an area where there are not a lot of distractions. Beagles for some reason tend to have trouble focusing on you if there are other moving dogs or people in the room.

Second of all, you should try and keep the training periods short. Most experts recommend sessions of no longer than 15 minutes. If you do want to train longer, simply break it up into short periods throughout the day.

Third, try to involve the whole family. Your new dog should get used to taking orders from everyone in the household, even your children.

You should involve your children in the training because it helps make sure that the dog knows that they are dominant over it. And not the other way around. If the dog feels that they are dominant over little children they could be in harm’s way.

If you don’t feel confident enough to train your own pet, there are many great resources available to you today.

One place that many people turn to are books. There are dozens and probably hundreds of books on this subject in libraries and bookstores.

Professional trainers can also help you with instructing your new pet. Sometimes seeing one of these trainers in action can help to inspire you to learn more about dog training.

No matter what path you take, Beagle puppy training should be started as soon as they are weaned from their mother. This way you can influence the easiest while they’re still young.

Since the domestication of the dogs (roughly 15000 years ago according to some estimates), there has been a wide range of breeds available. There are about 475 registered breeds in the world today.
