Miniature Beagles – Pocket Beagles
Mini beagles, also known as English pocket beagles, are a smaller breed of the standard beagle dog breed which we all have grown to love. Mini beagles were originally used for hunting. Hunters would put these tiny dogs in their pockets and carry them around for later to retrieve their kill. Mini beagles are small in size and could get under bushes and shrubs which come in useful when hunting for small animals like rabbits. Miniature beagles are still bred today but they aren’t used as much for hunting anymore and more as cute puppies for the family.
Mini beagles are bred to be around 8-13 inches in height and are estimated to weigh 10 to 15 pounds at mature age. You can find mini beagles in all coat colors that you would expect from the standard beagle dogs. The more popular mini beagle hide colors are black tri-colored, brown tri-colored, Bluetics and Redticks. Their coat is short and easy to keep clean. Which means you won’t have to wash your mini beagle that often as long as he or she stays out of too much trouble.
Despite their small size, mini beagles have a lot of energy so it’s best that you have a backyard for them to run around in and explore. Make sure your backyard is fenced and the mini beagle can’t get under the fence to escape since oftentimes, their curiosity gets the best of them and they might follow a scent of another animal right out of the yard. Mini beagles have a strong sense of smell and the scent of another animal can lead them to trouble so be sure to keep an eye on your mini beagle dog. If you live in an apartment and don’t have a back yard then be sure to take out your beagle out on plenty of walks. Mini beagles were originally bred for hunting and chasing down wild game and not sitting cooked up inside.
Over time the mini beagle dog breed was almost extinct in England, Ireland and Scotland as the larger beagle dogs were bred since they were faster and stronger and could handle much larger game. However, Olde English Pocket Beagle Registry is bringing back this breed and there are more mini beagle, or pocket beagle, breeders popping all over the world. Remember before you purchase your miniature beagle from a breeder to do your research first. Make sure they show you the papers of both the father of the puppy and the mother. Expect the mini beagle puppies to weigh around 3-5 pounds at 8 weeks of age. Also expect your miniature beagle puppy to act like the standard beagles because they are same dogs, just smaller.
